2024 Michigan Medical Education Day

Michigan Medical Education Day is a statewide event designed to educate pre-med students about the medical school application process. The 2024 event will be held virtually via Zoom on Thursday, October 24th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm.

The 2024 MMED is geared at enhancing your pre-med journey. You will gain invaluable insights into the medical school admissions process directly from Deans and Directors of all seven medical schools in Michigan! This year’s event will feature a brief case study discussion, admission directors’ panel, and medical student panel.

Who can attend?

This program is designed for current (2024-25) college students who do not have an active medical school application. Michigan residents and/or those attending college in the state of Michigan are particularly encouraged to attend. Those who have already submitted or are in the process of submitting an AMCAS or AACOMAS application for the current application cycle are not eligible to attend this event.

Save the Date – MSU College of Human Medicine Student-Led Pre-Medical Conference

Pre-Medical students are invited students to the upcoming Pathways Pre-Medical Conference. This event will be held on October 12, 2024, from approximately 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI. 

The Pathways Pre-Medical Conference is a new initiative with the goal being to showcase multiple pathways into the medical field and emphasize that there are various routes to medical school success. Undergraduate students, particularly those from underrepresented and non-traditional backgrounds are encouraged to attend.

The conference is more than just discussions, it’s a hands-on experience.

Sessions will include admissions panels, mock interviews, financial aid discussions, and unique experiences such as suture clinics and anatomy tours.

The cost to attend is $15 for a 1-day event.

Refreshing the Premed Competencies

The premed competencies which were formerly known as the core competencies for entering medical students have been updated through a joint effort between the AAMC and members of the academic medicine community to reflect current and future expectations for new medical students.

The premed competencies continue to cover a broad range of professional, science, and thinking and reasoning competencies. In addition to knowledge of science, aspiring physicians need to understand different perspectives, engage in self-reflection, demonstrate humility, and have a desire to grow and learn. The premed competencies serve as a roadmap for students as they prepare to succeed in medical school.

Medical school admissions committees will begin using the updated premed competencies in the 2024-2025 application cycle to evaluate applicants’ readiness for medical school through a holistic review of each application. The AAMC also continues to offer resources to support prehealth advisors and students as they prepare in these areas and demonstrate them on their medical school application.
